A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF A
LIGHTED PATHWAY BETWEEN CAMPUS AND DOWNTOWN
WHEREAS, the
Preamble to the Student Senate Rules and Regulations states that, “The Student
Senate shall work to build a vital and thriving University community
encompassing students, faculty, staff and administration, and
WHEREAS, the
Preamble to the Student Senate Rules and Regulations states that, “The Student
Senate shall work to strengthen ties between the University community and all
the residents of
WHEREAS, high
amounts of crime, poor sidewalk quality and a lack of adequate lighting in the Oread Neighborhood area have been ongoing concerns for
students at the University of Kansas, and
WHEREAS, a
safe, accessible lighted route between Louisiana Street and Massachusetts
Street along the North side of 12th Street will directly benefit
both students at the University of Kansas and the Lawrence community, and
WHEREAS, the
proposed lighted pathway will encourage safe pedestrian travel between downtown
establishments and locations on campus, student housing, Greek housing,
boarding houses, and permanent Lawrence residents’ homes, and
WHEREAS, the
motion-activated LED lighting in the proposed pathway will be energy efficient,
create minimal light pollution and increase pedestrian safety, and
WHEREAS, a
newly constructed concrete path which is easily accessible will encourage
travel between campus locations, student housing locations and downtown
locations to occur in one area, increasing collective safety.
