Established 100 years ago as a Student Government Council in 1909, Student Senate represents student interests at the state, municipal, and university level.  Being privileged with the ability to play a significant role in allocating funds and shaping the policies that affects the entire university community, Student Senate helps ensure that the University of Kansas continues to be a student driven and focused institution.

Aside from representing student interests to various governance entities, Student Senate also directs funds (most of the campus fees go into funds overseen by Student Senate) with the goal of spending them in a way that brings the most benefit to as many students as possible.  Basically, that means that the 94 student senators spend their “student senate time” doing everything they can to help students and student groups accomplish the goals that they have for their time at KU.  This means that throughout any given year Student Senate will work towards goals as varied as making KU a more environmentally friendly place to the creation of a simply awesome Yoga club.

Of course, Student Senate itself is also an educational tool for the students who participate in it.  Although it is just one piece of a large governance system at a state University, students who take part in Student Senate also will still go do things that “real” politicians in other legislative bodies do.  Get to know lots of the people they represent, work with other senators to prudently distribute a limited amount of funds among a wide variety of requests, campaign, debate, and produce legislation.  If you are thinking about joining Student Senate and would like to know more about what that would mean for you, check out our new get involved section.

KU updates campus community with H1N1 (swine flu) alerts.
